Marriage and Family

Society and Values Association believes in the critical role of marriage and family in forming and development of each individual. Healthy societies are made up of strong families. With its annual initiatives in support of marriage we aim to encourage and strengthen marriage as a union between one man and one woman and family as the best environment for giving birth and raising a child.
We closely monitor legislative initiatives in this area and actively advocate for the best interests of children and families.
We collaborate with experts, professionals and organizations defending individuals and families at home and abroad to meet the constant pressure of redefining marriage and changing family values.

Marriage week

In February 2012 Society and Values Association successfully launched the international initiative "Marriage week" in the country, which includes activities designed to consolidate and strengthen the marriage and the family.
It aims to contribute to building a positive image of marriage in the society by encouraging couples to put their marriage in focus and to develop skills for a successful and happy marriage.
Resources, married couples stories/interviews shared in the media, and ways to participate are available in Bulgarian language at the website www.brak.bg we have dedicated to this initiative.

Marital cohabitation

From the beginning of 2008 till June 2009 the civil organization "Society and Values Association" focused on the protection of the Bulgarian family. The Association undertook intensive educational campaign and a series of civil actions on the dangers of adopting the marital cohabitation in the country, which included the legalization of polygamy, incest and homosexual partnerships.
For a year and a half Society and Values Association participated in several conferences and public discussions, organized peaceful protests in support of children and families, participated in many radio and television shows and more. The Association issued a booklet "Myths of the new Family Code."
The action continued until June 2009 when the National Assembly rejected art. 13 of the new Family Code.

Surrogacy

In 2011, Society and Values Association explored the practice and consequences of legalizing surrogacy in other countries and undertook civil actions in connection with the government attempts to decriminalize it in the country.
We initiated domestic and international pressure to stop the legalization of surrogacy (2011-2012): Giving international publicity to the surrogacy case in Bulgaria has led to an opportunity for a conference to be held at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg (2012);
Surrogacy roughly tramples the rights and dignity of women and children. It leads to commercialization of parenting and reproduction. Society and Values Association supports the current legislation under which surrogacy is a criminal offense. We believe that it should remain prohibited, if we do not want to destroy the lives of children and the next generation.
